Providenciales, Turks & Caicos Islands (December 15th 2009) - Today marks a significant day for Caicos Pride Products Ltd., a seafood distribution company based in South Caicos. At a press conference, the company announced a major accomplishment, to be the recipient of the important Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification. The announcement was made by Dr. Steve Otwell, a Professor for Seafood Technology and Food Science at the University of Florida, and the USA National Director for Seafood HACCP Alliance.
Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points is a systematic preventative approach to ensure food safety. This approach to food safety reduces or eliminates the risk of hazards occurring in the production of food. HACCP is internationally accepted as the premier system for ensuring food safety. According to Otwell, "Food safety is essential to the reputation and value of the nation's seafood resources. This is a growing concern particularly for small nations with valued but limited resources that depend on consumer confidence. Proper HACCP programs have become an expected foundation for food safety in seafood commerce around the world. It is more than a regulatory mandate it is an expected food safety assurance program."
Caicos Pride Products Ltd. is the first seafood processing plant to be HACCP certified in the Turks and Caicos Islands and the first in the Caribbean to have achieved this advanced level of certification. Caicos Pride sells local conch, lobster and scale fish throughout the Islands as well as internationally to North America. "Receiving the HACCP certification is a major accomplishment for us as it further endorses the quality and safety of the products that we sell to customers. We have been in business for more than 10 years and we are very proud of what we have been able to accomplish and extremely proud of the products which we sell. I also want to thank the personnel at the Department of Environment Health who have worked closely with us on the process" stated Jim Baker, General Manager.
Also in attendance were members of the Ministry of Health's Environmental Health Department and Ministry of Natural Resources, the two government departments with the responsibility of regulating the country's seafood industry.
